Ben Nevis Distillery, founded in 1825 by the towering John “Long John” McDonald, is one of Scotland’s historic producers. After a period of decline in the 1980s, the distillery was revived in 1990 under the ownership of Japan’s Nikka Whisky. This 26 Year Old single malt was drawn from a single sherry butt filled in November 1996, with only 533 bottles expected. Produced during the Nikka era, it reflects the distillery’s distinctive style—robust, waxy, and fruity—and connects to the region’s volcanic past, as Ben Nevis itself is the remnant of an ancient supervolcano.
