Taketsuru Pure Malt combines single malt whiskies from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. The whiskies are matured in various oak casks before being blended to create the finished expression.

Masataka Taketsuru, regarded as a pioneer of Japanese whisky, studied whisky production in Scotland before returning to Japan in 1920. He founded Nikka Whisky in 1934 and established the Yoichi Distillery. In 1969, Nikka opened the Miyagikyo Distillery, creating a second source of malt whisky.
