Following the 1823 Excise Act, George Smith became the first licensed distiller in the Highlands, establishing The Glenlivet in 1824 on the former farm distillery of Upper Drummin. At the time, many neighboring distilleries operated illegally and relied on smuggling, resenting Smith for running a legal operation.
