Bowmore’s Mizunara Cask Finish is a limited-edition Islay single malt initially matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before spending three additional years in virgin Japanese mizunara oak. The whiskies used were distilled in the 1990s. Mizunara oak is primarily native to Japan, with limited growth in China and Russia. Its scarcity is attributed to the trees’ slow growth and the challenges of working with the wood. Beam Suntory, Bowmore’s parent company, produces a limited number of mizunara casks and supports replanting initiatives. The Mizunara Cask Finish was limited to 2,000 bottles and bottled at cask strength of 53.9% ABV.
