2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru

"If one needed any more evidence that Vincent Mongeard is at the top of his game today, then consider just how beautifully he has done in the 2009 vintage! His 2009 Grands Echézeaux is truly exceptional, with no signs of overripeness in evidence and a very classy and elegant profile on both the nose and palate. The excellent bouquet delivers scents of baked plums and black cherries, venison, chocolate, woodsmoke, fresh nutmeg, a fine base of soil, a touch of mustard seed and a sound foundation of nutty new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full- bodied and nicely plush on the attack, with a fine core, moderate tannins and very good length and grip on the wide open and really blossoming finish. The wine is already starting to show some autumnal shadings and is not a bad drink today, but I would give it another four or five years in the cellar to allow it to more fully develop its secondary layers of complexity.
